Summary

Adiba Jaigirdar, author of one of Time's Best YA books of all time, gives Titanic an Ocean's 8 makeover in this nail-biting heist set onboard the infamous ship。

Josefa is an unapologetic and charismatic thief, who loves the thrill of the chase。 She has her eye on her biggest mark yet--the RMS Titanic, the most luxurious ship in the world。 But she isn't interested in stealing from wealthy first-class passengers onboard。 No, she's out for the ultimate prize: the Rubiyat, a one of a kind book encrusted with gems that's worth millions。

Josefa can't score it alone, so she enlists a team of girls with unique talents: Hinnah, a daring acrobat and contortionist; Violet, an actress and expert dissembler; and Emilie, an artist who can replicate any drawing by hand。

They couldn't be more different and yet they have one very important thing in common: their lives depend on breaking into the vault and capturing the Rubiyat。 But careless mistakes, old grudges, and new romance threaten to jeopardize everything they've worked for and put them in incredible danger when tragedy strikes。

While the odds of pulling off the heist are slim, the odds of survival are even slimmer。。。

Perfect for fans of Stalking Jack the Ripper and Girl in the Blue Coat, this high-seas heist from the author of The Henna Wars is an immersive story that makes readers forget one important detail--the ship sinks。

While Josefa, Emilie, Hinnah, and Violet don't seem to have anything in common, they have one thing in common: stealing the Rubaiyat, a jewel-encrusted book aboard the Titanic that just might be the golden ticket to solving their problems。 But carless mistakes, new romance, old grudges and secrets put them in incredible danger as they try to complete their heist。 While the odds of completing their heist are slim their odds of surviving the Titanic are slimmer。。。A solid choice for anyone looking While Josefa, Emilie, Hinnah, and Violet don't seem to have anything in common, they have one thing in common: stealing the Rubaiyat, a jewel-encrusted book aboard the Titanic that just might be the golden ticket to solving their problems。 But carless mistakes, new romance, old grudges and secrets put them in incredible danger as they try to complete their heist。 While the odds of completing their heist are slim their odds of surviving the Titanic are slimmer。。。A solid choice for anyone looking for a historical action-adventure heist。 I struggled with the changing of the characters and keeping up but that feels more like a me problem of when I read it than a problem for the book。 The ending caught me off guard as well but it worked。 。。。more

This book had me hooked from the very first pages! An all feminine heist? Count me in!Fast paced, I literally forgot the Titanic is supposed to, well。 SINK。I enjoyed each character’s POV, the reading process was effortless thanks to an easy and straight-to-the-point writing。 WOC, sapphic, different nationalities and social background: great rep, for sure, even if it does seem like quite the discrepancy considering the book is set in 1912。 Why only rate it 3。25 stars, then? Well, despite being very enjoyable and diverting, something was missing。> First, everything came to them way too easily。 The stakes are supposed to be high and the mission is allegedly very risky, yet it rarely feels that way。 Many details and actions were dealt with through ellipses consisting of “Finally, she managed to (…)” or “When she succeeded (…)” but without any information given regarding the HOW。 > Second, the author added a note regarding historical accuracy by the end of the book, but didn’t address some aspects that I still have a few doubts on。 For instance, I’m (unfortunately) not sure Emilie would be thriving in 1912 in the US as a Black woman。 > Finally, our characters are apparently 18 at most, and considering what they went through in their personal lives before the book is set AND what they tried to achieve through this mission, it threw me off a bit。 I pictured them more in their early 20’s。All that being said, this book was certainly fun and with a nice cast of characters。So 3。25 stars, rounded down for GR。 。。。more

A really fun heist on the Titanic。 I liked the characters and their relationships with each other, but it seemed like there was a lot for how short the book was。 It probably could have been stretched out for another 50 pages or so and that would have allowed me to really connect with the characters。 The plot also seemed a bit ill-paced and the ending was rushed and seemed to just end。 However, I had a lot of fun with this and enjoyed the historical and heist aspect of it。 Really good for a teena A really fun heist on the Titanic。 I liked the characters and their relationships with each other, but it seemed like there was a lot for how short the book was。 It probably could have been stretched out for another 50 pages or so and that would have allowed me to really connect with the characters。 The plot also seemed a bit ill-paced and the ending was rushed and seemed to just end。 However, I had a lot of fun with this and enjoyed the historical and heist aspect of it。 Really good for a teenage audience。 。。。more

I'll be honest; A Million to One had me from the synopsis。 A heist led by lesbians on the Titanic? Sign。 Me。 Up。 While the planned heist of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (a real artifact that was on the Titanic and lost in the sinking) is the main storyline, Adiba Jaigirdar humanizes the four women at the center of the heist and makes you feel for them and their motives as they carry out their mission。 The sinking of the Titanic also adds a real element of suspense to the story - will the girls c I'll be honest; A Million to One had me from the synopsis。 A heist led by lesbians on the Titanic? 3。5 stars, rounding down。 Weird, but enjoyable。 Very YA。 Drama that came from nowhere and got settled too fast。 Characters that blatantly told you their whole life story and why you should root for them in the first 30 pages with no real introduction except for Josefa。 And Josefa was easily the best character (but I think I mean most fleshed out character because they are all charming in their own ways)。 But it was fun and I couldn't put it down and flew through it so。 Nothing to write home abou 3。5 stars, rounding down。 Weird, but enjoyable。 Very YA。 Drama that came from nowhere and got settled too fast。 Characters that blatantly told you their whole life story and why you should root for them in the first 30 pages with no real introduction except for Josefa。 And Josefa was easily the best character (but I think I mean most fleshed out character because they are all charming in their own ways)。 But it was fun and I couldn't put it down and flew through it so。 Nothing to write home about but not a waste of time either。"Make the most of what we yet may spend, before we too into the Dust descend。" 。。。more

this was a beautiful tale that honored the lives lost on the titanic in 1912。 even though the author had to guess about the very real people (Matron Wallis, Jack Phillips and Francis Davis Millet, may they rest in peace) you felt like you knew what they were like。 truly amazing, it hit my little titanic nerd heart right in the feels。

While I love a good orphan mystery, I wasn't wild about this book。 I also didn't like the bookcover with the four girls placed in a vertical column--the other cover is quite pretty though。 The audiobook narrator, Iva-Marie Palmer, did a nice job with the girls' voices。 What were the million to one odds that the title is from? I must have missed that。。。Overall this book was okay, and I was zoning out near the end because I stopped caring about anything。 If you like historical fiction based on tru While I love a good orphan mystery, I wasn't wild about this book。 I also didn't like the bookcover with the four girls placed in a vertical column--the other cover is quite pretty though。 The audiobook narrator, Iva-Marie Palmer, did a nice job with the girls' voices。 What were the million to one odds that the title is from? Jaigirdar is three for three with this one。 Her books manage to balance this chord of heartache and pain with joy and resistance。 The setting of the Titanic and careful incorporation of facts really worked。 All four main characters were fleshed out and had their own unique voices。 There was genuine suspense which is rare for YA books。 I’d love to read more historical fictions from Jaigirdar!

this book was rough around the edges and bumbly as as all hell, but it had heart and it made me crythe good: the sapphic romance, the found family, and the drama; it was fast-moving and entertaining enough to keep reading the bad: riddled with silly plot convenience; it really could have done with another 50 pages to flesh out characters and make the girls’ talents/skills more apparent so their successes in the heist didn’t feel so unbelievably convenient

A Million to One by Adiba Jaigirdar⭐⭐⭐The writing in this book is great, the characters are really well developed, all have a full backstory and descriptions that bought them to life。 The benefit of it being set on the Titanic was that it was something that we know so could be easily pictured and so the setting was great too。To be honest I struggled with this book, because although the writing was fantastic and the chapters would switch between each character's point of view and actions - which A Million to One by Adiba Jaigirdar⭐⭐⭐The writing in this book is great, the characters are really well developed, all have a full backstory and descriptions that bought them to life。 The benefit of it being set on the Titanic was that it was something that we know so could be easily pictured and so the setting was great too。To be honest I struggled with this book, because although the writing was fantastic and the chapters would switch between each character's point of view and actions - which broke it up nicely and gave us that detail (and also included a countdown to the sinking) - it wasn't until at least 80% of the way through that the action really started。 Although we all know from the start that our four main characters were in jeopardy and likely wouldn't all survive to the end, it took a while to get to that。 Apart from the sinking, it felt almost like a first of a series, really getting to know the characters and the dynamic between them all。 Which did help to build those emotional ties to the girls, and so it was sad to leave them at the end of the book。I can't fault the writing at all, and the story with strong female characters, and themes of classism, racism, sexuality and betrayal it is one that I would recommend to fans of the Titanic and historical stories with those mentioned themes, but for me the pacing was a little off。 I will definitely read more from the authorA Million to One is published by @hachettekids on January 5th 。。。more

This is such a compelling set up for a story, and I really enjoyed parts of it, but the characters felt underdeveloped and as a result the ending did not have the poignancy I was hoping for。 That being said, Jaigirdar's works are enjoyable and I will continue to read them until they become truly great。 This is such a compelling set up for a story, and I really enjoyed parts of it, but the characters felt underdeveloped and as a result the ending did not have the poignancy I was hoping for。 That being said, Jaigirdar's works are enjoyable and I will continue to read them until they become truly great。 。。。more

I loved the premise of a Titanic heist。 I also thought that the character cast was the most diverse I have read, not just in background but in the characters' hobbies as well。 It was fun to read about an acrobat, an artist, a thief, and an actress coming together。 That being said, while I found these to be interesting, I didn't find myself connected or invested in the storyline。 Mostly, I kept reading because I wanted to see how the heist was going to be handled and how the Titanic sinking would I loved the premise of a Titanic heist。 I also thought that the character cast was the most diverse I have read, not just in background but in the characters' hobbies as well。 It was fun to read about an acrobat, an artist, a thief, and an actress coming together。 That being said, while I found these to be interesting, I didn't find myself connected or invested in the storyline。 Mostly, I kept reading because I wanted to see how the heist was going to be handled and how the Titanic sinking would be told。 In the end, it was ok。*An ARC was given to me in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
